Recently in Japan, from the viewpoint of realizing a low-carbon society and stock management, refurbishment of old waste incineration plants has been promoted to save energy and prolong their lifecycles. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. carried out refurbishment work on the Northern Iwaki Clean Center to introduce the latest low air ratio combustion system EGR-PLUSR, which combines exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and advanced stable combustion control, and a small generator, in order to reduce CO2 emissions. This report presents an outline of the refurbishment work and the operation status thereafter.
