Since its foundation in 1884, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has sought to pioneer new approaches to manufacturing, and has built the foundations for the development of the entire industry. MHI manufactures 700 items in a very broad range of fields, including aerospace rockets, power-generation facilities, ships, industrial equipment, and home air conditioners. With energy and environmental issues becoming challenges shared by the entire planet, we are contributing to society through our operations, for example, by providing a large number of green products to address issues in global society and by developing social and industrial infrastructure around the world.
We express our value to society through our CI (Corporate Identity) statement, "Our Technologies, Your Tomorrow." This statement proclaims MHI's strong intention to "continuously provide an assured future where people can live safe, secure and enriched lives through technologies that can excite people and passion as a manufacturer for the sustainability of the earth and humankind."
Also, we see Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as the axis of our management. Our policy is to contribute to social progress through our operations, complying with laws and regulations, and striking a balance between the global environment and economic activities. To promote CSR, we established "CSR Action Guidelines" in July 2007, which shows the principles to be followed by employees. We aim to become a company that pays constant attention to social viewpoints, fulfills social expectations, and thereby wins the trust of stakeholders.
In April 2010, we produced the 2010 Medium-Term Business Plan (five-year business plan), aiming to establish a stable revenue structure and accelerate business growth globally. Although we had developed two three-year medium-term business plans in the past, we drew up a five-year plan this time, taking into account the challenging business environment and the nature of the Company's businesses.
In the 2008 Medium-Term Business Plan, our basic policies were global growth in the production business and business process reform. However, even as demand declined in the wake of the global economic downturn in the second half of FY2008, the yen remained strong and material costs continued to surge. Consequently, in FY2009 we put the FY2010 target values set out in the 2008 Business Plan on hold and activated the "Challenge 09" Company-Wide Emergency Plan to ensure that we achieved profitability in FY2009. As a result of the Company-wide initiatives, although orders and net sales were lower than expected in FY2009, we achieved operating income of 65.6 billion yen, exceeding our target of 65.0 billion yen.
The current market environment is characterized by a shift in economic power from North America, Europe, and Japan to emerging nations, a strong yen, and high material costs, along with an increased awareness worldwide of the need for action to protect the global environment. In the 2010 Business Plan, we are continuing and expanding the initiatives that produced results in the 2008 Business Plan and we will seek to rapidly resolve issues exposed through the global economic downturn, aiming to advance reform and achieve global growth by responding to the rapid changes in the market. Meanwhile, we aspire to achieve our goals through global CSR activities and by harnessing the comprehensive strengths of the Group.
As a manufacturing company that supports the sustainability of the Earth and its people, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is committed to sustainable growth and to taking on new challenges. We respectfully ask for your continued understanding and support.
