Reactor Coolant Pump

The reactor coolant pump, one of the key rotary machines within the plant, circulates the high-temperature/high-pressure reactor coolant. It consists of a vertical shaft and a single-stage suction diffuser with excellent hydraulic efficiency. A non-contact controlled leakage system is adopted for the shaft seals to enhance the reliability under extended and continuous operation. A cartridge type seal and the extension of service life of the seal has bean introduced to improve the maintainability of reactor coolant pumps, and the service life of the seal has bean extended through improvements the design and material specifications, MHI is also developing a robot to be used to overhaul the reactor coolant pump seal. The performance and integrity have bean duly verified by full flow tests in the MHI facility.
