Mechanism of Combined cycle power plants

  • In combined cycle power generation, as shown above, the gas turbine generates electric power, and the steam produced by the waste heat of the gas turbine rotates the steam turbine to generate electric power together.
  • The reasons or characteristics that make the combined cycle a leading generation process for newly installed thermal power plants:
  • (1)High thermal efficiency
43% by a steam turbine alone
and 40% by a gas turbine alone --> Over 50% by a combined cycle
  • (2)Environment friendly
    • Emitting less carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere
    • Emitting less nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) to the atmosphere
    • Discharging less thermal pollution into the sea
  • (3)Reducing fuel consumption to save resources
