The car carrier "NEW CENTURY 1" was completed on August 25, 2001, by Mitsubishi Heavy industries, Ltd., at the company's Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works. The ship, owned by FENG LI MARITIME CORPORATION (essentially Toyofuji Shipping Co., Ltd.), mainly operates between Japan and the United States.
This vessel is newly designed to be an "ecology ship" and for "fast cargo handling," and it incorporates new equipment, structure,
and arrangement, as follows.
- As 8 of 12 decks are arranged to gave high clear height decks for tall vehicles, such as RVs (recreational vehicles), it is possible to stow many kinds of vehicles and to make a flexible plan.
- A wide stern rampway (width 8m) and wide straight rampway (width 8.1m) are adopted for fast cargo handling, including reduced CO2 emission from vehicles due to shorter usage during rolling on/off.
- The Mitsubishi UE engine is adopted as the main engine, which features low fuel oil consumption and low NOx emission, aimed at reducing CO2 and NOx.
- The Integrated Bridge System (IBS) is a safety ship/shore navigation management system that enables economical navigation, through transmission of voyage data and engine data from ship to shore.
- The Mitsubishi stator fin serves as an energy-saving device, reducing fuel oil consumption.
- For environmental protection, a solar power generator, as a clean energy device, is equipped and provides electric power for the ship's living quarters, and further, an ammonia refrigerant is used for the air-conditioning system.
