Marine Engine

What is a diesel engine?

The diesel engine was invented in Germany by Mr. Rudolf Diesel, in the latter half of the 19th century.
It is an internal combustion engine using light or heavy oil as fuel. It is driven by an explosion in a cylinder caused when high pressure / high temperature air in a cylinder comes into contact with the Diesel fuel which is injected at high pressure using a fuel injection pump. This is unlike a gasoline engines, driven by the blast caused by air mixed with fuel and sparked by a plug.

Diesel engines are classified by speed / output as follows, and the use of each type is also given below;

Diesel engines are manufactured in our Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works, Yokohama Docyard & Machinery Works and General Machinery & Special Vehicle Headquarters. Each works manufactures different types of diesel engines. MHI Kobe works has been specializing in low-speed diesel engines for a long time.

Type rpm Output Use Works
High Speed over 1000rpm under approx. 3000HP General Machinery, Vehicles
Emergency Generator
Main Propulsion for small ships
Auxiliary generator for large ships
General Machinery & Special Vehicle Headquarters
Medium Speed 1000-300rpm approx. 1000-20000HP Emergency generator
Small class generating plants
