Tokyo Electric Power Kawasaki Thermal Power Station Group 1 is Completed

Recent years have brought a focus on environmental problems such as global warming, and higher efficiency is sought for thermal power station construction. A result of its striving for higher temperature, larger capacity gas turbines, MHI delivered gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants which adopts its latest M701G2 gas turbines for The Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. Kawasaki Thermal Power Station Group 1. All plants in Group 1 started operation on February 5, 2009.
Kawasaki Thermal Power Station Group 1 is equipped with three 500MW GTCC power plants, constructed as a 1500MW total output LNG fired state-of-the-art high efficiency power plant. This has received praise as a high efficiency, environmentally friendly plant with low CO2 and NOx emissions. It was voted Best Project at the 2008 Projects of the Year Awards held by Power Engineering, and is continuing to operate smoothly as a highly reliable plant.

This plant adopts the large capacity, high efficiency M701G2 gas turbine developed based on well proven technology. For its steam cycle, it also adopts an heat recovery steam generator ( HRSG) and steam turbine which handle high temperature, high pressure steam conditions. Work went smoothly from when the first turbine lit off in December 2006 until the final turbine’s trial run was completed in February 2009, with all turbines beginning commercial operation on February 5. It achieves the worlds highest level of 59% plant efficiency (LHV). This heat efficiency is at least 20% superior to conventional thermal power plants (relative value). This plant is sure to contribute to society and the region, ensuring reliable, stable electric power, supplying steam to neighboring factories, and as an environmentally friendly plant.
