NPRC Sendai Refinery 2nd gas turbine combined cycle power generation facility is completed
September 20 marked the completion of work on a second gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power generation facility at the Nippon Petroleum Refining Co., Ltd.(NPRC) Sendai Refinery (Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture). This power generation facility has been built as part of a project undertaken by NPRC to upgrade facilities at its Sendai Refinery, and is highly efficient in that the fuel it uses consists of gas created as a by-product of the increased production on-site of propylene and xylene. With a power generating capacity of 101.98MW, the facility is able to provide enough power for its own needs, using the surplus to operate as a power producer and supplier (PPS).
The plant features the world's first 2-on-1 GTCC, which employs a fully fired boiler, and is able to continue generating steam even if the gas turbine comes to a standstill. Moreover, through the use of many different types of fuel gas in addition to by-product gas, depending on the refinery's gas balance, a high degree of flexibility is possible in the facility's operations.
