MHI's
UE series diesel engines for maritime vessels receive top assessment of reliability |

At the 24th CIMAC (Conseil International des Machines a Combustion)
Congress held at Kyoto in Japan from June 7th to June 11th, 2004, the Technical
Committee of the Japan Marine Engineer's Asociation, (one of the Association's
Specialist Committees) presented a investication report on the reliability of
marine diesel engines. According to the analysis, of the three major brands of
low-speed diesel engines for maritime vessels, MHI's UE engines had the lowest
failure rate and the highest reliability.
After the top-ranked UE engines, Sulzer engines were ranked second.
The research examined statistics for the period between 1990 and 2000, concerning
main diesel engines failures on 341 vessels operated by 15 maritime transport
companies. The failures within the first three years or the first 30,000 hours
of operation were investigated.
Mitsubishi UE engine was ranked as he engine having he highest reliability with
the lowest rete 11.9% of failure among the three major brands. The rete of failure
of MAN B&W engines was reported as 33.0% and the same for Sulzer as 31.9%.
As the result, Mitsubishi UE engines were recongnized as the most reliable engine
burand again following the similar analysis, which was done at the last CIMAC
Congress at Hambug on 2001.
