MARK-30B, The New Diesel Engine With The Highest Efficiency In The World Started Operation In MHI Nagasaki As On-Site Power Generation.

MHI started operation of the first plant of the MARK-30B diesel engine generator this January to meet captive demand for electricity at its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works. Its generating efficiency is the highest in the world at 47%. It is operated in DDS (Daily Start & Stop) mode from 8:00am to 8:00pm every weekday (Monday through Saturday). The MARK-30B diesel engine generator has already marked a cumulative total of 1,200 hours of operation since January, and is up and running.

As a derivative of the KU30 diesel engine, some 270 units of which have already been delivered with some engines operating over 100,000 hours, the MARK-30B has been upgraded in efficiency and output. The MARK-30B lineup consists of 6, 12, 14, 16 and 18 cylinders to cover a generator output range of 2,590 kW to 8,100 kW, up 40% from the predecessor. The former KU series ranged from 12 to 18 in the number of cylinders, and have been upgraded into the MARK-30B series by adding 6-cylinder engines (output: 2,590/2,700 kW) to meet a wide variety of customer needs.

The first unit installed at Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works delivers 7,780 kW with 18 cylinders.
Technically speaking, the maximum pressure in the cylinders has been increased by 55%, fuel injection pressure by 33% and combustion cycle has been optimized to achieve the highest level of diesel engine efficiency in the world.

The lubricating oil pump, cooler and filter are modularized and assembled onto the diesel engine, which is then integrated with a generator and set up on a vibrationproof mount as a package, to simplify and shorten the installation work. The MARK-30B is designed to reduce the maintenance cost by extending the periodic maintenance interval to twice as long as the ordinary maintenance cycle time.

The first plant for Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works is provided with ceramic dust removal systems and turns the plant into a smokeless system.
In the future, an emulsion system will be installed which is effective in reducing NOx and easy to adjust to changes in NOx level due to changes in atmospheric conditions.

At MHI Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works where the new diesel engines are manufactured, “KU Customer Support Center” is operating on a full-time, 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week basis to provide remote supervisory service. The MARK-30B diesel generators will also be subsumed under this service system.

(Note) MARK is an abbreviation for Mitsubishi Advanced and Revolutionary KU engine.
