Low-Noise, High-Performance, Variable-Speed Control, Gear-less Wind Turbines Using a Permanent Magnet-Type Multipolar Synchronous Generator

MWT-S2000, S600 and S300 are advanced, practically applicable large scaled wind power generation systems featuring domestically developed technology. Operation at an optimum speed, responding to wind velocity, enables to minimize fluctuations of power output and effects to the power grid. These characteristics are suitable for the Japanese wind power market. Compared with conventional turbines, many improvements have been made in view of performance and reliability. These wind turbines are expected to lead to higher economic efficiency, with potential for mass production in the future, and to promote the introduction of wind power generation.
Features of Equipment, Systems, and Facilities
They are commercial, large scaled wind turbines employing pitch control, variable speed control, gear-less structure, and a permanent magnet-type multipolar synchronous generator, for the first time in the world.
A combination consisting of a permanent magnet-type multipolar synchronous generator, and an inverter/converter, has allowed fluctuation of wind turbine output and voltage variation to be greatly reduced (conventional machines, within ±50%; synchronous machine, within ±3%). Further, there is no rush current when the generator is incorporated into the power grid system.
For example, MWT-S600 generates about 1,200 MWh per year at a site with an annual average wind velocity of 6 m/s. This means that the efficiency is improved by about 6% compared with conventional machines.
