New Type Gas Engine Power Plant
Supply of Electricity to Special-scale Power Providers Inaugurated

The MHI MACH-30G is the world’s highest efficiency performance gas engine. The first unit has been installed in Kanazawa power plant of MHI Yokohama Power Company; (Below, “MY Power”) located at Kanazawa Plant of MHI Yokohama Dockyard and Machinery Works. This newly installed MACH-30G began commercial operation from October 1st. Installation ceremonies were held on October 18th.

The total output of the Kanazawa power plant was 11,500kW. The project calls for installation of two of the new MACH-30G gas engines, each having a rated output of 5,750kW. The MY Power project design features aimed at providing maximum protection for the environment around the plant include a NOx removal system installed in the exhaust gas system. In addition, a radiator has been included for recycling the engine cooling water thereby avoiding the need to discharge used cooling water. The over-all system meets all of the Yokohama City Environment Protection Standards, the most severe standards in Japan, for noise, vibration, waste gas and wastewater.

MY Power is an electric power company financed and owned completely by MHI. Its total output is 11,500kW of which approximately 4,000kW are used on-site by the Kanazawa Plant. As an additional part of its business operations, MY Power will sell approximately 7,000kW to the special-scale power provider’s grid (ENNET Corporation; See note #1).

The MACH-30G is world’s first engine to reach an electric power output efficiency level of 42.5%. Including the first unit for MY Power, MHI has already received orders for 28 units that are currently being manufactured and installed and orders for 20 additional units appear to be immanent.
MHI, using this first installation, will continue to verify the reliability of the new engine and will use the installation as a model plant to expand sales. In addition, the operations of MY Power will provide operating and management experience in actual power plant operation that will contribute to the accumulation valuable know how and also to MHI’s expanding activities in the area of distributed power generation.

MHI also has a plan to equip the MY Power Kanazawa Power Plant as a showcase for MHI New Power-related products.
In 2002, as a part of a field test, MHI installed a new NEDO (See Note #2) industrial-use solar electric power generating system on the roof of the Kanazawa Power Plant (Made by MHI’s Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works; output of 10 kW). Also, during fiscal 2002, on an adjacent location, MHI will carry out a detailed study of wind conditions as a joint wind-power generation field test project in cooperation with NEDO. This is another example of the company’s growing activity in the area efforts to support the diffusion of Clean Energy
