Okinawa Electric Power Company Kin No. 1 Boiler put into commercial operation

On February 22, 2002, the Okinawa Electric Power Company Kin No. 1 Boiler was put into commercial operation.
This installation was built to be Okinawa Power’s main power generating facility. With a capacity of 220MW, it is the largest coal-fired power generating facility in Okinawa Prefecture.
MHI supplied the sub-critical steam generator (steam capacity: 660t/h) and other auxiliary equipment and systems such as the flue gas treatment system (the NOx removal equipment, the electrostatic precipitator, and the SOx removal equipment), the coal unloading system, the ash handling system, the waste water treatment system, etc.
The main fuel being used consists of 18 kinds of coal imported from 4 different countries. This plant incorporates extensive environmental protection features such as flue gas treatment, waste water treatment, enclosed coal storage facilities for eliminating dust, prevention of noise pollution and others.
To maximize the plant’s efficiency, the steam temperature is set at the maximum for this class of facility (main: 566°C, reheated: 566°C).
This plant was designed to reduce the number of operators necessary for running the plant control system and all other operations (including auxiliary equipment that can be controlled from the central control room) using control system CRTs.
At the time of boiler installation, large-scale modular construction methods were used, which reduced the need for potentially dangerous work high above the ground and helped to improve the overall quality. These were the first modules produced at the Mitsubishi module plant in the Philippines.
