Tokyo, January 21, 2009 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order for an 800 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired gas turbine combined-cycle (GTCC) power generation system from ENMAX Green Power Inc., a subsidiary of ENMAX Corporation, a Canadian electricity provider. The GTCC power generation system is destined for the Shepard Energy Centre to be newly built near Calgary, Alberta, and slated to be online to serve the winter load of 2012. The highly efficient generation system will provide enough electricity for over half of Calgary's robust electricity demand.

ENMAX Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary. MHI received the order through MPS Canada, Inc. MPS Canada, located in Ontario, is a Canadian subsidiary of Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MPSA), a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of MHI. The company handles MPSA's power generation equipment business in Canada.

For the newly ordered 800 MW power generation system, MHI will provide two M501G1 gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and one steam turbine. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will supply generators.

With GTCC type power generation, gas and steam turbines are used in combination to generate electricity in two stages, utilizing high-temperature exhaust gas from the gas turbine. This configuration enables GTCC power plants to achieve higher thermal efficiency than non-GTCC plants such as conventional boiler steam turbine plants. Higher efficiency means that GTCC plants reduce fuel consumption relative to electricity output and emit less CO2, thus making them friendlier to the environment.

MHI has delivered numerous GTCC power generation systems in Japan and abroad, and in the process has gained widespread trust in the market for its proprietary technologies and prompt delivery record. On the strength of the latest order, going forward MHI intends to further strengthen its activities to expand the global market for highly efficient GTCC power generation systems.
