| Bulk Order for 4 LPG Carriers from BP Shipping |
| Tokyo, November 4, 2003 -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received
an order for four LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) carriers from BP Shipping of the
United Kingdom. BP Shipping is the shipping division of BP, one of the world's
largest petroleum and petrochemicals groups. The new double-hulled ships will
have a capacity of 83,000 cubic meters and are expected to be used east of Suez.
MHI will build all four units at its Nagasaki Shipyards and Machinery Works, with
delivery of the first ship scheduled for mid-2006. MHI has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with BP Shipping since construction of the 215,603-deadweight ton tanker "British Explorer" in 1970. Since then MHI has built 19 tankers for BP, but this is the first order for an LPG carrier. To date MHI has built more than 51 LPG carriers, all highly acclaimed within the LPG marine transportation market. The order from BP Shipping marks Japan's largest LPG carrier order on record. BP Shipping has an international fleet of over 30 ships, totaling some 3 million deadweight tons, engaged in the business of carrying oil and gas for the BP Group and other customers. In view of today's steady demand for LPG carriers worldwide, MHI aims to further strengthen its marketing activities in this segment going forward. They will complement the company's continuing initiatives to promote liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, for which global demand is increasing. # # #
