| Taiwan Order for Refuse-Incineration & Power-Generating Plant |
| Tokyo: October 9, 2003 -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received
an order from Taiwan for a large-scale waste-incineration and power-generating
plant that utilizes waste heat from incinerators to produce electricity. The order
was placed by Fortune Energy Corporation for its Miaoli Refuse Incineration BOT
project. Fortune Energy will build and operate the plant based on a BOT (build/operate/transfer)
scheme awarded to the Taiwanese company. The plant is slated to commence operation
in May 2006. The plant will consist of two stoker-furnace incinerators, each capable of processing 250 tons per day, and an 11.8 MW (megawatt) power-generating facility. Stoker furnace is extensively used for incinerators due to its proven performance. The power plant will contain two heat recovery boilers, one steam turbine and one generator. The electricity produced here will be sold to Taiwan Power Company. MHI will be in charge of engineering work, including basic design of the plant, and supply of key equipment, such as incinerators and boilers. This represents the second incineration plant order MHI has received from Taiwan's private sector, following the order of two incinerators, each with 450-ton-per-day capacity, for the Wujih Refuse Incineration BOT project in Taichung county in 2000. Seven years ago, Taiwan government initiated the move to privatize refuse incineration and, to present, four BOT scheme incineration plants have been built. Taiwan currently has plans to locate at least one incineration plant in each of the island's 16 counties. The newly ordered plant will be the first one in Miaoli county, and it is expected to contribute significantly to local environmental enhancement and improved sanitation. MHI has delivered 17 refuse-incineration/power-generating plants in Asia, excluding Japan, of which five plants in Taiwan. On the strength of this solid record of plant orders, MHI now plans to further boost its related marketing activities internationally. # # #
