| Order for Flue Gas Desulfurization Unit for Tianjin Dagang Power Plant in China |
| Tokyo, October 8, 2003 -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), in tandem with
China Huadian Engineering Corp., a local engineering company, has received an
order from China for a large-scale flue gas desulfurization (FGD) unit. The FGD
system, to be installed at the Tianjin Dagang Power Plant operated by North China
Power Group Co., will remove SO2 (sulfur dioxide) from
flue gas. This order marks MHI's successive FGD order from China, following the
order placed by Chonqing Jiulong Electric Power Co., Ltd. for its West Plant,
Chongqing, China in February this year. The Tianjin Dagang plant, which is currently undergoing conversion, uses two 328.5 MW (megawatt) coal-fired boilers. The new FGD will be able to treat 2,262,000 Nm3 (normal cubic meters) of flue gas per hour, the boilers' total emissions, with 95% desulfurization efficiency. Operation of the new FGD equipment is scheduled to commence in 2004. MHI will be in charge of the basic design of the unit, which will be the decisive factor determining plant performance, and supply the key equipment, such as components of absorber tower and mixer. SO2 absorption will be achieved applying MHI's proprietary Double Contact Flow Scrubber (DCFS) technology. In addition to ensuring high desulfurization efficiency, DCFS facilitates user convenience through its easy maintenance features. The merits of DCFS technology, as well as MHI's proven record in FGD operation in Japan and globally, were highly evaluated and resulted in the award of the contract. In the DCFS system, limewater, a liquid absorbent slurry, is evenly distributed throughout the absorber tower from spray nozzles installed at the bottom, in contrast to conventional systems in which slurry is sprayed from the top. As a result the slurry contacts with the flue gas twice, first when sprayed upward and second upon its descent. The double contact ensures efficient slurry-gas contact, to yield outstanding desulfurization. Demand for FGD units for coal-fired boilers is expanding significantly in China due to that country's strengthening of its environmental protection regulations. In recognition of this trend, MHI aims to boost its FGD marketing activities in China substantially in coming years. # # #
