Order For World's First Replacement Pressurizer Awarded To MHI
For Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Station of Omaha Public Power District

Reactor Vessel Head Order Also Secured
Tokyo, September 16, 2003 -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has received an order from Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) for a pressurizer and reactor vessel head to be used as replacement equipment at a nuclear power station. Pressurizer replacement is unprecedented and will be a global first. The order marks the second designation this year from OPPD for major replacement equipment. In February, OPPD ordered two replacement steam generators from MHI.

The pressurizer is an integral component of the equipment that forms the primary system in pressurized water reactors (PWR). It controls pressure in the reactor to prevent coolant water from boiling. The order for a reactor vessel head, which is the vessel's top section, is MHI's second from the U.S.; the first was received in September 2002.

The equipment ordered will be installed at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Station located approximately 30 km north of Omaha, Nebraska. The Fort Calhoun facility, which commenced commercial operation in 1973, has a single reactor with an electrical output of 492 MW (megawatts). Replacement of its major equipment is being carried out in preparation to extend the plant's operating life by an additional 20 years beyond the currently scheduled close in 2013, pending approval of a license renewal application currently before the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Upon completion of this newest order, the bulk of the major equipment in the plant's refurbished primary system will consist of MHI products.

Equipment delivery is scheduled for 2006. Installation work is not included in the contract.

The pressurizer to be manufactured will measure 8.5 meters in height and 2.5 meters in exterior diameter and will weigh roughly 60 tons. The reactor vessel head will be 2.5 meters high, 4.3 meters in exterior diameter, and weigh some 40 tons. Both will be made of low alloy steel.

On the strength of the successive orders for major components of primary systems of nuclear power reactors, MHI now plans to step up its related marketing activities in the U.S. further.
