Consolidated Order Received from Evergreen for Ten Large Container Ships
Biggest Container Ships Owned by Evergreen
Tokyo, July 23, 2003 --- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received a consolidated order from Taiwan's Evergreen Group for 10 large container ships, and concluded a construction agreement on July 23. The signing ceremony for the contract was performed in Taipei, attended by Evergreen Group Chairman Dr. Chang Yung-fa and MHI Director and General Manager of Shipbuilding & Ocean Development Kazunori Ohta.

The vessels ordered will be the Evergreen Group's biggest container ships, able to accommodate the equivalent of 6,724 20-foot containers. They will be constructed at MHI's Kobe Shipyard. The company plans to deliver them every three months from August 2005 to October 2007.

MHI has an unprecedented track record regarding large container ships for Evergreen, having received orders for 38 successive vessels, from the EVER REWARD, delivered in March 1994, to the HATSU ETHIC, delivered in January 2003. This longstanding relationship with Evergreen, and Evergreen's good attention to the quality and performance of the ships supplied by MHI so far, has led to the present order.

The main feature of the new container ships is their environmentally friendly structure. For example, they employ bulkhead tanks, which utilize hold(*1) bulkheads as fuel tanks, and the fuel tanks have a double-hulled structure, to reduce the risk of oil spillage in the event of collision or running aground.

The ships' main engine is the Mitsubishi Sulzer Diesel Engine 10RTA96C (continuous maximum: 54,900 kW x 100 min-1)*2 , which achieves a top speed of 25.3 knots.

As loading facilities, each ship will be equipped with 19 long tall lashing bridges(*3), for improved loading efficiency and safety. Additionally, in response to the recent increase in shipping of refrigerated containers, this series of ships can accommodate 839 refrigerated container units in total.

(*1) Hold=Container storage compartment
(*2) 100 min-1=100 rpm (revolutions per minute)
(*3) Lashing bridge = Container lashing structure that ties a pole and container with a rope, and fix after erecting a pole on the deck.
