Blackmail from former MHI Subcontractor's Worker (Inspection Result)
Tokyo, June 5, 2003 - On May 21st, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (hereafter MHI) made an announcement that a letter of blackmail had been received from a former worker of a subcontractor to MHI Takasago Machinery Works and MHI Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works (hereafter "Company-A"). In the letter he claimed that he had made a number of improper welding formations to the Base Plates of main feedwater pumps used in the secondary system of nuclear power stations while working for Company -A. The orders had been received from MHI Takasago Machinery Works.

MHI has conducted a conclusive inspection of the Base Plates of 8 Turbine-Driven Main Feedwater Pumps based upon the in-depth descriptions of the faulty work received from the blackmailer. The inspected stations include Ohi Nuclear Power Stations 3 & 4 of the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. and Genkai Nuclear Power Stations 3 & 4 of the Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. Additionally, 4 Electric-Driven Main Feedwater Pumps of the same power stations were tested for faulty work.

The inspection included the examination of the measurement of the welded portion, examination of inner defects using supersonic waves and the element analysis by drilling holes in the welded portions. The result of the inspection on all 12 Base Plates showed no sign of improper welding formations.

While utility companies and communities expressed concerns, MHI confirmed that the Base Plates are safe.
