| MHI RECEIVES ORDER FOR FOUR LARGE-SIZE FLUE GAS DESULPHURISATION UNITS FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM |
| Tokyo, March 21, 2000 -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), teamed with FLS miljo a/s of Denmark, has received a full turnkey order from TXU Europe Power Ltd. of the United Kingdom for the installation of four large-size flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) units. The contract's value amounts to approximately 20 billion yen in total. FLS miljo a/s is a licensee of MHI's FGD technology. The contract is for the design, supply, construction and commissioning of wet limestone - gypsum process FGD facilities for four 500MW coal-fired power generation units at the West Burton Power Station, located 200 kilometers north of London. The FGD system removes SO2 (sulfur dioxide) from flue gas emitted from coal-fired boilers. MHI will provide basic engineering and supply key components related to gas path and absorbers while FLS miljo a/s will be responsible for the supply of limestone and gypsum handling facility, as well as civil and construction work. The completion is scheduled for autumn 2003. Each absorber of this FGD system, which has a treating capacity of approximately two (2) million Nm3 (normal cubic meter) of flue gas per hour, adopts the latest technology of Double Contact Flow Scrubber (DCFS) developed by MHI jointly with The Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. The DCFS can achieve higher desulphurisation and dedusting efficiency with low operation cost, and the absorber tower itself is practically empty of internal fitting so it is extremely easy to maintain. These merits were highly evaluated and resulted in the award of the contract to the MHI/FLS Consortium. The bidding was held in June 1999, and was participated in by five groups from the U.S.A., Europe and Japan. MHI is a comprehensive manufacturer and a leading supplier of environmental equipment and technology for various applications including air, water and refuse treatment. MHI has supplied 200 FGD units throughout the world, among which 50 units are located in Europe. In the U.K., actions are being taken to promote the further utilization of existing coal-fired power plants while temporarily halting the construction of new gas-fired power generation plant in light of views to diversify energy sources and fully utilize the domestic coal industry. With the enforcement of more stringent environmental regulations, several projects to retrofit FGD facilities for existing coal-fired power stations are being planned in the U.K. MHI expects increasing demands for FGD system in the U.K. and will aggressively undertake to secure further FGD orders. TXU Europe Power Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of TXU (formerly Texas Utilities) of the USA, is a leading electric power generation and distribution company in the U.K. # # #
