MHI to Launch 2 New Multipurpose 4-Cycle Gasoline Engines
- Advances in Noise/Vibration Reduction and Easy Starts -
Tokyo, November 17, 2005 - On November 18, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) will commence marketing two new models in its Mitsubishi Meiki Engine GB Series of single-cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke cycle OHV (overhead valve) multipurpose gasoline engines. The GB Series, which was launched this summer as an enhanced lineup superseding current GM Series, achieves significant reductions in engine noise and vibration as well as improved startability. The two newly added models are the GB130 with maximum power output of 4.2 PS* (3.0 kW) and the GB180 with 6.3 PS* (4.6 kW) (*pferdestarke: metric horsepower). MHI will market the engines for use in agricultural machinery, mostly cultivators. The company has set a sales target for the GB Series, including the GB100 model (3.0 PS) introduced in summer 2005, of 150,000 units per year.

In response to the aging of the farming population, MHI developed the GB Series by improving performance with respect to an engine's most basic elements: noise, vibration and startability. Engines in the GB Series are among the quietest in the class, thanks to the attainment of 4-decibel (dB) noise reduction compared with current GM Series. Noise reduction was made possible largely by strengthening the rigidity of the cylinder block and redesigning of parts. Engine vibration has been reduced by 15%, chiefly through the adoption of lighter pistons.

The third outstanding feature of the GB Series is their easy starting system. In engines with standard specifications, the force to pull the starter rope has been reduced by 15% compared with the GM series, achieved through refinement of MHI's proprietary decompression mechanism. Furthermore, both new models can be equipped with a key-ignition starting system - a feature rarely available for 4 PS class engines.

GB Series also takes into account emission control, not only current EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), but also CARB (California Air Resource Board) standards in North America and EU Exhaust emission regulations.

Prior to introduction of the GB Series, MHI commenced marketing of its fully remodeled TB Series of 2-stroke multipurpose gasoline engines early this month. To mark the launches of all the new models, MHI will hold a commemorative event in Nagoya on November 18 to show off their superior performance features.
