MHI Receives Chinese Order for Reactor Coolant Pumps
For Unit 3 and 4 of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant Phase II
Tokyo, October 24, 2005 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order for four reactor coolant pumps from China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation (CNEIC) that undertakes the import of nuclear equipment. The pumps on order will be installed in the unit 3 and 4 nuclear power plants of Qinshan Nuclear Power Project Phase II, which Nuclear Power Qinshan Joint Venture Company Limited (NPQJVC) will construct. The NPQVC is owner of Qinshan Phase II and will construct, operate and manage these power plants.

The unit 3 and 4 PWR (pressurized water reactor) plants, 650 MW (megawatts) each, will be constructed at the adjoining site of existing unit 1 and 2 plants in Qinshan, Haiyan County of Zhejiang province, located at approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Shanghai. The unit 3 and 4 will be identical plants with unit 1 and 2. The new plants are slated to go on-stream in April 2011 and February 2012 respectively.

The reactor coolant pump is one of the important components to make the heart of a nuclear power plant and circulates high-temperature/high-pressure reactor coolant that transmits thermal energy generated at a reactor to steam generators. In constructing the unit 3 and 4 of the Phase II, while reactor vessels and steam generators will be domestically manufactured in China based on the policy of Chinese government, NPQJVC has decided to purchase reactor coolant pumps from overseas. The order was awarded to MHI after an international bidding competition.

Each of the large-size reactor coolant pumps on order has a flow rate of 24,000 m3 (cubic meters) per hour with a motor output power of 5,200 kW (kilowatts). MHI will supply four pumps in total, two pumps each for the unit 3 and 4. The delivery of pumps at Shanghai port is slated to begin in June 2008 and complete in February 2010. These pumps will be manufactured by MHI's Takasago Machinery Works and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The installation work at the plant site is not included in the contract.

MHI has established a longstanding cooperative relationship with Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant through previous delivery of key components, such as reactor vessels and reactor coolant pumps, for its Phase I, and unit 1 and 2 of Phase II construction. MHI believes, the latest order was awarded to MHI due to customer's high evaluation on the company's technological expertise and product quality demonstrated by previous deliveries. Especially, the new plants are identical with existing plants at which MHI's pumps are being operated smoothly.

MHI will aggressively promote marketing activity of its nuclear power equipment in Chinese, U.S., European and Asian markets to expand its nuclear business globally.
