MHI Receives Order for Ladle and Scrap Charging Cranes
From Feng Hsin Iron & Steel of Taiwan
Tokyo, March 7, 2005 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order for a ladle crane and a scrap charging crane from Feng Hsin Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. of Taiwan. The steelmaker is currently expanding its electric arc furnace (EAF) installations, and the two newly ordered overhead traveling cranes are to form key components of a new production line. Both cranes are slated for delivery in March 2006.

With EAF type installations, iron is fabricated by melting raw materials such as iron scrap and pig iron in the furnace. During the steelmaking process, a scrap charging crane is used to transfer iron scrap to the EAF; a ladle crane is used to carry ladles that contain molten iron poured from the EAF.

The ladle crane on order has a 200-ton hoisting capacity (main hoist) with a 70-ton auxiliary hoist and a span of 25.5 meters. The scrap charging crane features a 130-ton hoisting capacity (main) with a 50-ton auxiliary hoist and 26.0 meter span. Both cranes adopt a mandrel axle that passes through the center of a drum hoist hooked to a wire rope. They are also equipped with emergency drum brakes to ensure full operational safety.

Feng Hsin Iron & Steel is ranked among the Taiwan's top EAF makers and a leader among iron and steel producers. In reflection of robust expansion in demand for iron and steel throughout Asia, in recent years the company has been recording growth in both sales and profits exceeding 20% per annum. The new EAF is being added to respond to this booming market.

The latest order manifests Feng Hsin's high evaluation of MHI as a global leader in cranes for steel mills, including its abundant record, technological expertise, product quality and services. Those collective attributes are well demonstrated by the high capacity operating rates of the cranes previously supplied by MHI to China Steel Corporation, Taiwan's largest iron and steel producer.

On the strength of the new order, MHI will further strengthen its marketing activities for cranes for iron and steel mills in countries and regions where EAFs are fully operational, including China, Taiwan and Korea, in addition to Japan.
